Assignment 6

  1. The Lincoln County School District is facing a bond over-ride election in three months and wishes to do some telephone polling to see how public sentiment is running. A random sample of 50 voters is called (at the dinner hour) at a cost of $300 and asked whether they support passage of the over-ride in the upcoming election. Thirty of the persons contacted said they planned to vote "Yes." You are to report the poll results to the superintendent's council. You have three options you can recommend: a) tell the council that the election is in the bag and not to worry; b) tell the council that passage of the over-ride looks doubtful and that they should start a campaign to drum up support; c) ask the council for more money to expand the survey (make more phone calls). Choose an option and support your choice with the most sophisticated statistical argument that you can muster. You will probably need to resort to resources like the online program for confidence intervals on proportions.

  2. On a standardized IQ test, the national average is a score of 100. Experimenters have randomly sampled 36 infants from the national population and had their parents play classical music during the infants' afternoon naps for the first 18 months of their lives. When the infants reached age 5, they were given a nationally recognized IQ test and the following results were obtained:

    Mean = 104.54;     Standard Deviation = 18.62

    Is there evidence from this study that playing classical music during infants' nap times will increase their IQ? (I hardly need to tell you that a "yes" or "no" answer will not suffice. This page should prove useful in composing your answer. )

  3. This problem and the final problem (#4) use data from the High School and Beyond datafile (hsb.xls). Using the High School and Beyond data, calculate the value of the correlation coefficient between Self Concept and Math Achievement. Place a 95% confidence interval around this calculated value of r. Use these results to address the following argument of Professor Mensch: "The only reason that self-concept and achievement are correlated is because achieving in school causes a child to have a strong self-concept, not because a good self-concept produces better learning."

  4. In which of the following populations is the hypothesis of "No association" or "independence" between the row and column classifications true?

      MaleFemale
    Sports fan 45%45%
    Not a sports fan55%55%

    Indicate True or False:

  5. Use the High School and Beyond datafile to crosstabulate Ethnicity and Type of School (Private v. Public) attended for the roughly 600 persons in that sample. Do the results indicate that Ethnicity and School Type are "independent" or "associated" in the population of high school graduates? That is, are students of any one ethnicity any more or less likely than students of any other ethnicity to graduate from private schools?
