Words to Wise AOL Users

If you connect to the internet through America Online, you may have special problems downloading and using the Excel data file. AOL loves to keep its customers inside its browser at all times, so when you download the Excel file for Lesson 1, the AOL browser is likely to launch the Excel program on your hard drive inside of your AOL browser. That can be really annoying (they do it, of course, so that you never lose sight of all the wonderful advertising that AOL brings you). Because of how the browser is configured, it can be difficult or impossible to Save the datafile you have downloaded onto your hard drive. Here's one "work around."
  1. Select the data in the spreadsheet appearing inside your AOL browser by clicking and dragging from the upper left-hand corner of the spreadsheet throughout the entire display of data, then choose Copy from the Edit menu.
  2. Now shut off your AOL browser and open your Excel Program.
  3. Click in the upper left-hand corner of the spreadsheet, then select Paste from the Edit menu.
  4. Unless we miss our guess, you should now be able to work with the data in the spreadsheet; the first thing you should do is Save a copy.
